EU-landen hebben de dodelijkste grenzen ter wereld; jaarlijks sterven er duizenden mensen, veelal afkomstig uit Afrika en het Midden Oosten. Vele anderen worden er vastgehouden en leven onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden als ‘illegalen’, waardoor zij gemakkelijk te exploiteren en deporteren zijn. In de driedelige serie Decolonising La Mer Mortelle onderzoeken we alternatieven voor deze dodelijke situatie. In deze tweede Nederlandstalige editie – met de verkiezingen in het vooruitzicht – laten we de verbeelding spreken: welke dekoloniale alternatieven voor het huidige beleid kunnen wij ons voorstellen?

De kleur van katoen

De kleur van katoen is het levensverhaal van Nate Shaw, een zwarte pachtboer uit het Diepe Zuiden van de Verenigde Staten. Het werd in 1974 gepubliceerd en won meteen de prestigieuze National Book Award. Historicus Theodore Rosengarten had Shaws meeslepende verhalen precies zo opgetekend als hij Shaw, een geboren verteller, had horen spreken. Naar aanleiding van de eerste Nederlandse vertaling van de hand van Frans Kooymans gaat Rosengarten in gesprek met twee jonge historici: Dan Afrifa en Liang de Beer. Moderatie: George Blaustein.

The recently published book A Hundred Years of Republican Turkey: A History in a Hundred Fragments, a project of Leiden University’s Turkish Studies, explores Turkey’s complex history since 1923 through one hundred expertly curated fragments of historical sources. Our panel will discuss this innovative new exploration of Turkey’s past century.

In zijn nieuwe boek De Kesslers vertelt Jeroen Koch de familiesaga van de familie Kessler, die grondleggers voortbracht van twee van de grootste Nederlandse ondernemingen: Koninklijke Shell en Hoogovens. Het is een verhaal over Nederlandse burgerlijke cultuur in Azië en Europa: van ondernemerschap, gezinsleven en opvoeding, via kunst, sport en wetenschap, tot oliewinning en westerse overheersing. De uitgewiste horizon: Europa’s obsessie met cultureel verval 1835-1914

In zijn nieuwe cultuurgeschiedenis De uitgewiste horizon toont historicus Cor Hermans hoe de grootste denkers en schrijvers van de negentiende eeuw bevangen raakten door het schrikbeeld van het naderende verval van de Europese cultuur. Samen met historici en literatoren Guido van Hengel en Eva Peek verkent Hermans de obsessie met cultureel en psychisch verval die zich aftekent in het werk van onder anderen Baudelaire, Tsjechov, Wagner, Nietzsche, Ibsen, Kierkegaard, Flaubert, Freud, Toergenjev en Dostojevski.

Prisons and Urban Inequalities

How do criminal justice interventions impact urban inequalities? Conversely, what would the criminal justice system look like if we were to center the resolution of inequalities instead of crime? These are questions that lead the Amsterdam-based research project The Principle of Inequality: Between City District and Criminal Justice System in Amsterdam. As this project draws to an end, the research team has organized an international colloquium, bringing together critical research on prisons and inequalities from around the world. Dr. Rashad Shabazz will share his work on the ways in which carceral power interacts with urban planning, and the policing and confinement of Blackness.

Kaási de rebellenleider: het vroege verzet tegen de slavernij in Suriname

Aan het eind van de zeventiende eeuw draaide de trans-Atlantische slavenhandel op volle toeren. Vanuit West-Afrika werden onder onmenselijke omstandigheden miljoenen tot slaaf gemaakten naar Noord- en Zuid-Amerika gebracht, van wie 600.000 op Nederlandse schepen. Een van hen was Kaási, een rebellenleider en de centrale persoon in het nieuwe boek van Frank Dragtenstein. Vanavond bespreekt de historicus met verschillende gasten zijn bevindingen over Kaási en de zijnen. Met spoken word door Zaïre Krieger.

De ontdekking van Insulinde: op reis in Nederlands-Indië in de negentiende eeuw

Het ‘prachtig ryk van Insulinde dat zich daar slingert om den evenaar, als een gordel van smaragd’. Met die woorden verheerlijkte Multatuli Nederlands-Indië in zijn Max Havelaar (1860). Vanaf de vroege negentiende eeuw trokken allerhande reizigers eropuit om het ‘moederland’ te informeren over het koloniale project. In de Jacob van Lenneplezing van dit jaar onderzoekt Rick Honings de indrukken en ervaringen die in hun reisverhalen zijn terug te vinden.

Beuys en de naoorlogse (kunst)geschiedenis: een ander perspectief

Wat is de betekenis van Joseph Beuys in de context van de naoorlogse West-Duitse kunst? In het afgelopen jaar verkenden kunstenaar Joseph Sassoon Semah en curator Linda Bouws in tentoonstellingen, debatten en performances de ontbrekende feiten in het kunsthistorisch perspectief op Joseph Beuys. Van dit project hebben zij nu een boek gemaakt. Zij gaan hierover in gesprek met Bas Marteijn, Emile Schrijver en Gregor M. Langfeld. Moderatie: Felix Rottenberg.

Niet met elkaar, maar ook niet zonder elkaar?

Diversiteit en academische vrijheid

Naar aanleiding van de klokkenluidersmelding van een docent bij sociale wetenschappen onderzocht de zogeheten commissie-Stolker het afgelopen jaar de academische vrijheid aan de UvA. Onlangs bracht de commissie haar conclusies naar buiten: van een angstcultuur is geen sprake. Wel merkte zij op dat academische vrijheid geen gegeven is – vandaar haar tiental aanbevelingen om deze vrijheid te bevorderen. Één daarvan betreft de oproep die vrijheid binnen de universiteit met elkaar te blijven bespreken. Vanavond, op Diversity Day, pakt een breed samengesteld panel deze handschoen op: met elkaar en met het publiek verkent zij de ruimte van ‘organised skepticism’ die de universiteit beoogt te zijn.

Gendergeweld in de praktijk van de wetenschap

Onzichtbare macht

Gender en geweld zijn nauw verweven, zoals feministen al sinds jaar en dag signaleren. Toch werden we in 2017 opnieuw wakker geschud door #MeToo en zijn we inmiddels enkele jaren, vele schandalen en dito momenten van publieke verbijstering verder. In Voorbij de verbijstering. Over gender en geweld belichten de redacteuren met bijdragen van journalisten, wetenschappers en kunstenaars de diepe wortels van gendergerelateerd geweld in onze cultuur, en de vele gedaantes die dit kan aannemen. Moderator Ilse Josepha Lazaroms gaat in gesprek met panelsprekers Renée Römkens, Sarah Bracke, Susanne Täuber en Conny Roggeband over de wetenschappelijke kant hiervan: de rol van gendergeweld in de praktijk van de wetenschap.

Nieuw licht op Hilary Mantel

Hilary Mantel was een buitengewoon veelzijdige auteur. Korte verhalen, essays en romans, historisch en contemporain werk, krantenartikelen: met haar ongelooflijke schrijftalent en verbeeldingskracht, en niet te vergeten haar verrukkelijke gevoel voor humor, kon ze elk genre aan. Een jaar na haar overlijden presenteren we Goed leren praten, de vertaling van Learning to Talk. Dit laatste werk wordt besproken door literair journalist Liddie Austin, uitgever Nelleke Geel en vertaler Niek Miedema, onder begeleiding van boekverkoper Bob Kappen.

Waarom nog – of juist nu – Céline lezen?

Op 4 augustus 2021 werd bekend dat er vier tot dan toe onbekende manuscripten van Louis-Ferdinand Céline waren teruggevonden. Komende jaren verschijnen alle vier in vertaling. Bij de verschijning van het eerste werk, Oorlog, gaat vertaler Rokus Hofstede met criticus Arnold Heumakers in gesprek over het belang van de omstreden schrijver Céline. Zij onderzoeken onder leiding van moderator Margot Dijkgraaf zijn antisemitisme, zijn relatie tot oorlog, zijn mensbeeld en literatuuropvatting, en waarom we nu nog – of juist nu – Céline zouden moeten lezen.

Het slavenschip. Marcus Rediker over de trans-Atlantische slavenhandel

Ruim drie eeuwen lang werden miljoenen mensen, nadat ze waren ontvoerd en verkocht, op slavenschepen van de Afrikaanse kust naar de Amerika’s vervoerd. Wat weten we over de schepen die de slavenhandel mogelijk maakten? Gebaseerd op dertig jaar archiefonderzoek in maritieme archieven reconstrueert gerenommeerd historicus Marcus Rediker de menselijke drama’s die zich aan boord van deze schepen afspeelden. Hij gaat hierover in gesprek met Lex Heerma van Voss.

Natiestaat en kolonialisme: een ongemakkelijk verbond

De vorming van de natiestaat in de negentiende eeuw ging gepaard met kolonialistische expansie. Daarmee rijst de prangende vraag hoe de inheemse bevolking van de koloniën in het staatsverband van de natie werd opgenomen. In Natiestaat en kolonialisme: een ongemakkelijk verbond, toont H.U. Jessurun d’Oliveira hoe universalistische verlichtingsideeën stootten op de (onder meer etnische) uitsluitingsmechanismen van het natieconcept. Ter gelegenheid van zijn boek gaat Jessurun d’Oliveira met verscheidene juristen en historici in gesprek over de frictie tussen natiestaat en kolonialisme.

Debating Holocaust and Colonial Memory Culture: Historikerstreit 2.0

In 2021, a heated debate ignited what the Australian historian A. Dirk Moses called “The German Catechism.” Moses criticized the German consensus on the uniqueness of the Holocaust. While defending this uniqueness, comparisons with other genocides are often not taken into account. Moses depicted German intellectuals as “high priests” who by all means defend their ideas. Simultaneously, they tend to overlook the colonial context of German atrocities in Eastern Europe, as well as wider debates on a variety of memory cultures. In his lecture, historian Michael Wildt sheds light on this new “Historikerstreit.”

Algorithmic Injustice

Algorithms play an increasingly important role in our daily life but come with serious societal risks. In recent years we have seen many cases of algorithms that show unfair biased behavior towards particular groups or individuals, for instance the Dutch Toeslagenaffaire. This leads to growing concerns about harmful discrimination and reproduction of structural inequalities once these technologies become institutionalized in society. During this evening on algorithmic injustice we explore and discuss both the philosophical and technical aspects as well as the lived experiences of people who suffered from unfair algorithms.

The 1981 Massacre in Iran: Uncovering a Forgotten Mass Atrocity

June 2023 marks the 42nd anniversary of the 1981 massacre in Iran, the most extensive massacre in its recent history. In the past few years, a group of scholars and investigative journalists formed a research collective (Rastyad Collective) and studied this highly neglected massacre. In this event, the speakers will discuss the historical, legal, and political significance of the 1981 Massacre and reflect on the results of this research project.

Hoe een Nederlandse bergnaam in Suriname ons koloniaal bewustzijn verandert

De Toemoek Hoemak Expeditie

In de documentaire De Toemoek Hoemak Expeditie verdiept Freek de Goeje zich in de gelijknamige expeditie in Suriname van 1907. Hij loopt in de voetsporen van cartograaf en antropoloog Claudius de Goeje, die in opdracht van de Nederlandse regering een deel van Suriname in kaart bracht. Hij legde ook de eerste contacten met de inheemse bewoners, waaronder de Wayana. Als blijk van waardering werd later door de regering een gebergte naar hem vernoemd: het De Goejegebergte. Honderd jaar later legt Freek de expeditie-route opnieuw af naar het Wayana-volk, waarvan het bestaan en de cultuur bedreigd worden door illegale goudmijnen, ontbossing, maar ook de kerk. Tijdens dit programma, georganiseerd in samenwerking met het Allard Pierson en de tentoonstelling ‘Open Kaart’, gaat De Goeje met anderen in debat over zijn film.
