Amerika heeft tussen 1850 en 1950 de sterke behoefte gevoeld om ‘nationale klassiekers’ te produceren, in analogie aan de Europese landen: zo zocht men naast de ‘great American novel’ ook naar een nationale Amerikaanse opera. Joep Leerssen spreekt hierover in de Nationale Opera & Ballet.

Het is opmerkelijk dat de opera die het dichtst in de buurt komt van zo’n status niet in de grootse tragische traditie van de grande opéra staat, maar integendeel een ‘folk opera’ is. In Porgy and Bess vervagen de grenzen tussen de opera en de musical; het is een Broadwayproductie gecomponeerd door een Joods-Amerikaanse componist van zowel populaire songs als grote symfonische werken. Muzikaal put de opera uit de volkscultuur van de zwarte onderklasse van de zuidelijke staten: jazz-achtige genres en stijlregisters (spirituals, ragtime, blues). Hoe kwam het tot zo’n productie? En hoe gaan we tegenwoordig om met de etniciteit die elkaar in deze productie kruisen? Een lezing van Joep Leerssen, hoogleraar moderne Europese letterkunde.
