Autisme. Een biografie

Tegenwoordig komt autisme bij ongeveer 1 op de 100 mensen voor en wemelt het in de populaire cultuur van de autisten. En dat terwijl het als diagnose nog niet zo heel lang geleden vrijwel onbekend was en voornamelijk bij kinderen werd vastgesteld. Bij de presentatie van zijn boek Autisme. Een biografie gaat de autistische schrijver en literatuurwetenschapper Niels Springveld in gesprek over de geschiedenis van deze opmerkelijke omslag.

Aan de hand van uitgebreid archief- en literatuuronderzoek laat hij zien hoe autisme zich ontwikkelde van een benaming voor een symptoom van schizofrenie tot een term voor een zeldzame kinderstoornis tot een veelvoorkomende vorm van neurodiversiteit.
Dit boek is het verhaal van deskundigen, van films als Rain Man, en van veranderende wetenschappelijke trends en diagnostische criteria. Maar boven alles is deze baanbrekende studie het verhaal van mensen met autisme en hun naasten – en van hun voortdurende streven naar acceptatie en erkenning.

Sprekers

Niels Springveld (1992) studeerde literatuurwetenschap en was redacteur van de Nederlandse Boekengids. Momenteel promoveert hij aan de Open Universiteit op een proefschrift over de geschiedenis van autisme in Nederland.
