Academic Freedom Under Attack

This panel discussion addresses the growing global assault on academic freedom—a cornerstone of democratic societies now under increasing threat from authoritarian regimes.

In this panel, organised by the AI, Media and Democracy Lab, we will explore how academic freedom is challenged today and why its defense matters not only for universities, but for journalism, public knowledge and democratic societies more broadly. The panel will also examine the challenges and opportunities that digital technologies and AI pose in this context.

Speakers include special guest Prof. Oscar Westlund (Professor at the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at Oslo Metropolitan University and Editor-in-Chief of Digital Journalism) and Prof. Natali Helberger (Professor Law & Digital Technology, with a special focus on AI at University of Amsterdam).

The panel program will consist of short introductions by the speakers, followed by a moderated discussion and Q&A with the audience. More speakers and a full program will follow soon.

Een avond met Jung Chang, auteur van de bestseller ‘Wilde zwanen’

Wilde zwanen van Jung Chang was in de jaren negentig een bestseller. Het was een boek dat een generatie definieerde – het verhaal van ‘drie dochters van China’: Jung, haar moeder en haar grootmoeder, en hun levens tijdens een eeuw van revolutie. Changs nieuwe boek Vlieg, wilde zwanen vertelt wat er daarna gebeurde. Deze avond spreekt Jung Chang hierover.

In its most recent Cultural Compass the EU argues that the value of culture should be recognised as a key strategic pillar of EU external action. This is based on a firm belief that culture will help the EU to protect and promote diversity, strengthen its global role, and deliver tangible benefits for societies worldwide. Yet this belief in the value of culture for international relations has become increasingly challenged. How to strategically invest in culture in a global context marked by ongoing conflict, geopolitical power play and ‘new’ imperialism?
