Revisioning James Bond

To mark the publication of Revisioning 007 (Wallflower Press, 2009), this event brings together a select group of 007 scholars to discuss the cultural significance of the world's most iconic superspy: Bond, James Bond. Treating the 007 series as a case study in popular culture, the speakers will address the relationship between the latest James Bond films and recent developments in cinema, society, and world politics. Topics of discussion will include the future of James Bond scholarship, the links between international politics and high-stakes gambling, and the changing role of the secret agent in a post-9/11 world order.

The speakers

Rene Glas is a PhD candidate and lecturer in the Department of Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam, where his research specializes in issues of control, agency, and ownership in computer games. He is also a freelance film and media critic.

Joyce Goggin is Associate Professor of Literature, Film, and New Media at the University of Amsterdam. Her work focuses on gambling, money, and culture. She is currently working on a book project about the industrial and visual history of Hollywood and Las Vegas.

Christoph Lindner is Professor of English Literature at the University of Amsterdam. His recent books in the field of James Bond studies include Revisioning 007 (2009) and The James Bond Phenomenon (2nd edn. 2009). His other book publications incliude Globalization, Violence, and the Visual Culture of Cities (2009), Urban Space and Cityscapes (2006), and Fictions of Commodity Culture (2003).


Estella Tincknell is Reader in Media and Cultural Studies at the University of the West of England. Her recent books include The Practice of Cultural Studies (2004) and Mediating the Family: Gender, Culture and Representation (2005). She is currently completing a study entitled Angels, Demons and Voices: Textual Uncertainties and the Films of Jane Campion for publication in 2010.
