Jos Delbeke, one of the creators of the EU’s climate change policy on one of the biggest challenges of our time.

The lecture will deal with the international situation following the Paris Agreement, the world's first comprehensive climate agreement that was adopted in December 2015, and the chances for its solid implementation. The second part will deal with how the EU is currently preparing for the delivery of its climate and energy targets for 2030. In this respect, ample attention will be given inter alia to the Emission Trading System, renewable energy, climate targets for EU Member States, and CO2 limits for passenger cars.

Jos Delbeke will give a lecture to respond to these questions. Dennis van Berkel, legal council at Urgenda, will act as discussant.

About the speakers

Jos Delbeke (1954) was the Director-General of the European Commission's Directorate-General for Climate Action since its creation in 2010 until February 2018. He is now Senior Adviser for Relations with the Florence European University Institute. Delbeke has been one of the driving forces in the development and implementation of the EU's commitment under the Paris Agreement on climate change. Delbeke has been responsible for developing the EU's international climate change strategy and was for many years the European Commission's chief negotiator at the United Nations climate conferences. Delbeke co-authored a book entitled EU Climate Policy Explained, which aims to explain the EU's climate policies in an accessible way.

Dennis van Berkel (discussant) is a legal council at Urgenda. The Dutch Urgenda Foundation aims for a fast transition towards a sustainable society, with a focus on the transition towards a circular economy using only renewable energy. It works on solutions for this transition, including for example the introduction and realization of ‘energy neutral’ houses and the acceleration of electric mobility. Urgenda views climate change as one of the biggest challenges of our times and looks for solutions to ensure that the earth will continue to be a safe place to live for future generations.
